Unfortunately, if soldiers are involved with killing it would be due to war and the people who are killed may not be 'criminals' but part of the army that is attacking innocent people - unfortunately it is what happens in wars. Innocent people will always be caught up in it - whether it be killed, injured or displaced. The Geneva convention that the British Army abides by states, 'civilians are to be protected from murder, torture or brutality . . . ' which is why if we go to war there are very good reasons and killing any individual is never taken lightly.
