Hi, I'm self employed and interested in joining reserves. The website says reserves get paid £42 a day in training and £53 when qualified. My business costs to just run my business are £60-70 per day to cover my unit rent, bills etc. If I'm having to take a week or 2 weeks off for training etc, do I only receive the £42 per day? Or is there a way to claim compensation for this while I'm doing training etc? Thanks in advance for any info.
Hi, this is an excellent question and 1 that is being looked at far further up the MOD than my payscale! This is a common issue because as a Reservist you don't get compensated whilst you are doing training etc. If you do the required amount of days and training you do get a 'bounty' (bonus) at the end of each year which ranges from 1st year c. £450 rising to up to c. £2000 for subsequent years. I understand that it's not ideal but what is becoming more pushed with the Army Reserves is the training that they get and the qualifications that they could receive (whilst getting the daily Reserves rate of pay) but the army will pay for the qualification so it doesn't fall to individuals! You also accrue 'leave' pay so after a certain amount of days work you receive leave which clearly can't be used by a reservist so that leave day is turned into a paid day (hopefully that makes sense!). Thanks for the question and i'm sorry it's just not a better answer for you!
