I am currently in second year of Biomedical Science and want to proceed to doing Medicine and was curious what funding is provided if doing GEM in Northern Ireland?
Hello,
I didn't know Ulster were starting a GEM programme, looks good!
I can see from their website that they currently aren't sure if the MBBS will be awarded by themselves or by St George's, but as long as the course ends with you gaining a medical degree and being eligible to do foundation years and gain full GMC registration (which it looks like it is), then I expect you would be eligible to apply for the bursary that all other medical students are able to apply for. I don't work in recruiting so can't say I am 100% certain on this, but I would be very surprised if there was an issue, if you do want to double check before you apply you can always contact the recruiting team directly.
The full details are on our website, but in summary its £10k/year for the last 3 years of medical school, with a £45k sum payable on completion of officer training (which you do after FY2).

I would advise applying in your 1st year instead of 2nd year as it says on the website, as I expect that is based on a 5 year course, and the application process can take a while sometimes.
I really appreciate you getting back to me, especially so fast.
Yes Ulster are taking their first GEM students in Sept/21!
Thank you for all that information, it has eased a lot of uncertainty and makes me excited that it is achievable! I will be looking into it with more knowledge to back me up :)
