Could you tell me more about officer roles in relation to air integration and joint fire. I.e TACPs FSTs etc.

Specifically about cap badges (RA/RAC etc). The best path to get there and the availability/chances.

    Hi Elliot,

The role of a Fire Support Team commander is only available to the Royal Artillery and is usually available to officers from circa their fourth year as an Artillery officer. The role of Officer Commanding the Tactical Air Control Party is available at a similar point but as you note has a mixture of both Artillery and Royal Armoured Corps Officers. Not all RAC regiments have OC TACPs and it is only one of their officers.

The FST Commander is trained to the same standards in Artillery observation as the soldiers within their team and, when required, can undertake this element of the role. The core of the FST Commander role is the bringing together of various assets be it Mortars, Artillery, Fast Air or Aviation to provide a coherent plan to the Infantry or Armoured commander. They also work to advise them on the risks of employing those assets.

I was an FST Commander and it was both a challenging and rewarding role and whilst not guaranteed, it is a role a lot of Artillery Officers get the opportunity to undertake.
