What is it like day to day
It’s very dependant on your role and which unit you are at
Are you able to do the AACC while with the Royal Medical Corps?
Depending on where you are posted depends on what you would do day to day it could be anything from treating casualties teaching others first aid
AACC?
The All Arms Commando Course
Of course it’s something that is open to all trades hence the name
Can i join the sbs?
How long does it take roughly to be completely qualified as a combat medic ?
The SBS is a special forces group so you would have to have a career in the military before you could apply but you can apply from any trade
What's life like in a warzone as a Combat medic
Training takes 22 weeks to complete this doesn't include holidays and provided that you pass all of the tests
What happens if you don't pass all the tests?
Cant answer as to being out on the battlefield but I can imagine it is pretty hectic as sometimes it can be dealing with casualties on a day to day basis
If you don't pass all of the tests the you'll get retested if you fail again then you'll be back squadded meaning that you will have to learn it again and have another opportunity to pass fail to many times the you may have to leave or transfer to a different unit
What does the role entail in general, as in what are your responsibilities? And whats your biggest piece of advice to someone wanting to become a combat medical technician?
Thank you
Https://apply.army.mod.uk/roles/army-medical-service/combat-medical-technician
Here you can find the key responsibilities
The role can vary massively depending on unit so I will tell you what the role would entail if you were attached to an infantry unit
Can Reserve CMT's be trained at any locations or are there only specific places where this can happen?
At an infantry unit the key responsibilities for a medic are to keep the soldiers healthy and ready for battle as it were, you also promote healthy living and conduct medical training, most mornings you will conduct sick parades to treat those that are sick or injured
The training will be done within your unit once you arrive
I am back at college trying to achieve my Maths grade, and I am currently working towards target, but if for some reason I don't get my Level 1, can i still join? Do they make exceptions? I still want to get my maths but wondering if I would be able to try again in the army, or would I have to go back to college again for it?
What units can you join? and do you get to choose(or do a top 3)?
If you do not achieve the grade in math then they will not accept you however when you join you will have the opportunity to learn and try it again from there you may be able to transfer to the RAMC
Eleanor there are many units within the RAMC but at the end of phase two training you choose your top 3
You are limited to units when you first join to medical regiments and field hospitals until you complete further training once that is done you are able to move more freely to a lot of other units although you get to choose your preferences you may not always get them
Okay thank you for the clarity. The transfer would not be guaranteed though, would it? Would i have to chose another role until then, or would i just train as a soldier until i get my grade?
Not always guaranteed a transfer depends on numbers and reasons for and you would have to train as something else until then this is why they ask you to choose 3 job roles when you apply for situations such as yourself
As a CTM do you get attached to units? How does it work?
If you achieve the grade during phase 1 it is possible to transfer in that time with good reason but it is not always guaranteed
You can be attached to different units however this is only possible after you become a class 1 medic until then you will have to stay at a medical regiment or field hospital to complete your training
Are the combat medics still recruiting?
As far as i am aware they still are as they are still in need of more medics
The army is always recruiting, your local army careers centre can advise which roles have waiting lists or are in high demand
As a combat medic could I use them skilles become a paramedic asa civil job
In essence yes
You can also follow the paramedic pathway within the army where you’re paramedical sciences degree will be funded by the army
For this you must be selected though
Yes if you gain your qualification as a paramedic in the army you can use it out on civi street
Just I have constantly been told by recruitment staff that there is a 2 year wait and to join the infantry
Thomas bare with me I’m just getting confirmation now
Thank you
If there is a waiting list you might not have to wait that long i was told 6 months for mine and i only had to wait 1
But youll get confirmation shortly
If I joined as a Combat Medical Technician , would there be a chance in the future to swap roles to become an Army Nurse or would I have to go through the process again ?
May take a minute to get a definitive answer as most of us are working from home, out of interest what regiment are the recruiters who’ve told you this
Would you be able to join as Infantry and then in 4 years reapply as a medic? Having the 4 years of infantry training should surely help with being a Army Combat technician?
I was told by the Coventry office
You are able to transfer to nursing however the longer and more experienced you are as a medic the more chance you would have however you would need to do your trade training again to become a qualified nurse however its all paid for by the army
Yes you can transfer at a later date, This will depend on UCAS points as we will be sending you to university.
Thomas I’ve just had it confirmed that the waiting list is a approximately year at the moment
Okay thank you.
What are sick parades?
You could transfer from the infantry however sometimes due to the infantry lack of numbers they may not let you go quite as easily however you will have good experience in combat but the roles are very different
Thank you
Sick parades are on every morning this allows people who are ill or injured to report sick at the start of the day to make sure they can work within their limitations or have to be off work for the whole day
Please follow the Army Medical Services on social media. The team answers questions everyday and there is someone from most of the CEGS, to answer specific questions.
What are CEGS?
Current engagement teams
Is there anything you would reccomend reading into to help for training
Anatomy and Physiology is a difficult one and a good place to start as you have to learn the foundations first
Career engagement groups , specific job roles within the AMS.
What is the day to day structure/routine like in training e.g. hours
Training is quite strict and usually consist of working between 8/830 till around 1600 / 1700 in that time there is usually an hour of PT then classroom work with practical scenarios and theory lessons unless on exercise but depends on what topics your leaning on you usually finish earleir on Fridays if you stay at a good standard
If you are good and keeping up with training you will finish earlier on days too
If I don’t have the qualifications to be a combat medical technician, is there still chance I can?
what A-levels do you recommend taking in order to become a CMT before UNI
