Career Path

Hypothetically, if soldier X completes his phase 1 training & therefore becomes a gunner, sapper, or whatever youcallit, after how many years do you think he will then be able to move to a higher rank, or gather up those specific type of skills requisite for an engineering job in a civilian life?

    Hi there Godwin.

This is a really difficult question to answer as there are so many variables. Promotion is not only dependant on how good you are, it is also dependant on how good your competition for promotion is and how many spots they are looking to fill. You could be excellent but if there isn’t a spot to move into that year then you won’t promote If you get what I mean.

What level of engineering job would you be looking to take up after time in the Army. If you can let me know that then I can give you a rough estimate but this estimate is my opinion, not fact.

    Godwin,

There are a number of routes you can earn civilian equivalent engineering roles that could be used on your departure. it is possible to earn the following:

NVQs (National Vocational Qualifications) at Levels 2-3 during Phase 2 (trade) training.

City & Guilds or BTEC Diplomas in engineering disciplines.

Apprenticeships in roles across the army

Chartered Engineering pathways, allowing progression to EngTech, IEng, and CEng status through affiliations with professional bodies like the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

These qualifications are aligned with civilian standards, making them directly transferable.

The timelines on when these can be earned depend on:

Trade Training Duration: Phase 2 training can last anywhere from a few months to over a year. For example: A REME Vehicle Mechanic might complete trade training within 30 weeks and gain Level 3 qualifications. An Army Electrician could earn NVQs and additional certifications over 16–30 weeks.

Rank Progression and Experience: Some advanced qualifications (like those required for EngTech or IEng status) may require several years of service and operational experience.

Typical Range: Basic qualifications (e.g., Level 3 NVQs) can be earned within the first year or two of joining. Advanced certifications (e.g., IEng, BEng) may take 3–5 years depending on the individual’s career development.

    I hope this helps.
