Hey James, good question. When you arrive at Sandhurst as a Regular officer, you don't have to know where you ultimately want to commission. There is a regimental selection process that sees you talking to lots of serving officers around the army, and going on a number of visits, before finally picking two cap badges you would like to take to a job interview. The result of this interview in your final term decides where you will finally end up when you commission. Pretty early in to the final term of Sandhurst you will know where you are going and be welcomed in to your new home. Everyone has to go through this process (unless you are a confirmed cadet prior to arriving).

As a Reserve or Professionally Qualified Officer, you are loaded on to the commissioning course with an assigned unit, so you will already know who you are commissioning in to before you start at Sandhurst.
