You can defer to join the army although it will depend on what you want to join. If you were looking to join as an officer because there are only 3 courses a year you could defer for (i think!) 5 years after you've passed the Army Officer Selection Board (AOSB). The army is very flexible as people may have a change in circumstance such as breaking / injuring themself, change in family circumstance, choose to spend longer in education etc etc. I hope this helps.
