Hi Toby, as an Infantry Officer I can safely say you will get your fair share of 'patrols' whilst satisfying various other duties during your Military Career. This will usually take place during Exercises and Operations (depending on the Op) that you will be out on the ground with your Unit. As far as other jobs, as long as you are satisfying your main responsibilities the world is your oyster to conduct as much patrolling or 'tabbing' as you like. However, as an Officer you will more likely be orchestrating and directing the units under you (i.e., your sections in the harbour for example) and the patrols they take for Ex/Op reasons.
