can I become an army doctor with an NHS medical apprenticeship or is a medical degree the only option?

    Hi Yasmin,

The medical apprenticeship leads to both a medical degree and registration with the General medical council which are our entry requirements for a medical officer. So I’m short, yes!

hi thanks for your speedy reply,
so do you think it would be better to do the medical apprenticeship for the experience of being in the medical field much more than if I were to do a normal medical degree? or does it not really matter as long as I have a medical degree with the GMC? Thanks :)

    Hi Yasmin,

It won't make a difference in regards to your application as to whether you do the apprenticeship or the degree, provided you end up with a GMC registration. I would recommend you pursue whichever training pathway you would prefer. As information is still limited about the apprenticeship programme I can't comment on it, but I would say that current medical students usually spend lots of time in hospitals from at least Year 3 (often earlier), so I wouldn't worry about the traditional route not giving you enough experience.

I hope that helps, best of luck with your decision.
