is there higher levels of training he could do in carpentry?
Hi, no one can ever really be over qualfied as it will help him to get further quicker the more qual'd he is. The army will also pay him whilst he goes through further training. If he has A'levels then potentially the careers office might suggest he looks at going the officer route - but he wouldn't be able to have a trade. Potentially being an officer might be something he aspires to later on when he's spent a couple of years in the army. There's so many options and things available it's about keeping an open mind, asking the questions and doing the research which clearly you are - on his behalf ;) Good luck to him.
