Neil J. asked a question to Robert N.
He only has GCSE grade 3's in maths & science Ultimately he wants to join REME Can he join REME as an apprentice or does he have to join another unit, eg a Tank regiment, go through the apprenticeship, and then transfer across to REME? Or is REME not available until he gets 4's meaning college
Hello Neil,
Firstly, yes, joining another role while you develop your qualifications before transferring is an option. The Army can help toward this using learning credits.
Just to make sure we're on the same page, I'll explain how an apprenticeship with the Army works:
You join as a soldier and begin your apprenticeship during your trade training. Trade training comes after basic training, which will teach you all the skills you need to be a soldier in the Army. After your trade training, you get posted to a unit (you can think of postings like 'jobs' and units like different locations run by different departments within the Army). At unit, you'll continue working toward your apprenticeship alongside your day-to-day life role as a soldier.
So, you don't join as an apprentice, you join as a soldier, and you complete an apprenticeship alongside your work.
As for entry qualifications: they need to be at least what is required on the role page. The requirements are based on the academic demand at entry-level to the job.
I hope that clears things up.
Magic, cheers for that.
