For context, I am currently going through the process of joining the army as an officer, I understand that I am a long way off yet and should be focusing on passing out of Sandhurst first and foremost. I really want to join the Royal Engineers and specialise in EoD and Search but I understand that you hop from unit to unit after passing the RE officer course. Are there any opportunities to stay with a unit and learn a trade in as much detail as regulars?
Good Morning, Its great to hear you already have some really good knowledge in regards to the EOD world. In terms of the core question, as an officer you wont be able to specialise in a specific Engineering related trade. i.e Fabricator, plumber, surveyor etc. However, if yo do go down the EOD&S route you will as an officer you will generally specialise in this area. So, you do have the opportunity to 'hop' around from unit to unit but from my experience with working with officers in this sector, they generally stay. So yes, there is opportunity to stay put especially in that respect, but in terms of getting a trade, you will be very limited as an officer. Hope this helps.
Warm Regards,
SSgt Rob Needham
Dear Robert, Thank you for your insightful response. Does this also apply if you were to join the Commando Engineers or the Ranger regiment?
Hi, I cannot comment on the Ranger battalion as I do not have enough knowledge on this being relatively new. Although yes this applies if you want to be a commando or a paratrooper, with officers not specialising in a particular trade.
Sorry, just to clarify, if you were to go down the EoD and Search route, would you learn about the technical side of bomb disposal as well as how to run operations?
Yes you would do the DEOC (Defence EOD Course) and if required the AEOC (Advanced EOD Course). As you will need to have an understanding of what the operators you manage are doing.
