Are there any roles that do not require any fighting or combat?

I am interested in joining the Army, but am worried about the chances of death or injury, etc..., in the case that any fighting or combat were to break out. Is there any role that would not require fighting or combat?

    Hello,

In short, no, there aren't any roles that don't require combat training.

If you're concerned about chances of death or injury the Army is a safe bet compared to some popular jobs with high fatal injuries such as construction or agriculture (Health and Safety Executive (2023/2024)) or some of the more dangerous jobs like retail worker or truck driver (Forbes Advisor, 2023).

Among other things, such as humanitarian aid and assistance to civilian authorities, one of the Army's capabilities is war fighting. Everyone needs to be able to fight, so, everyone in the Army is trained at some level to work in a combat role. That said, with hundreds of roles specialising in countless capabilities some are more likely to be deployed as a combat capability than others.

As an example: if you need to cook a meal, would you employ a Chef, or a Pharmacist Officer? You would probably choose a Chef, because they will usually have done more training on how to prepare a meal. The same logic applies to which of our roles are more likely to be used for Combat. However, no matter the role, all of our Soldiers and Officers are trained in at least a basic level of combat and are expected to use that training if required.

I hope that helps to clarify the job for you.

Are there any Officer positions that have a lower chance/likelihood of death? I am mainly interested in Ceremonial (Household Cavalry Officer), Intelligence/IT/Communications (Royal Signals Officer, Intelligence Officer), Logistics (Royal Logistics Corps Officer), and Human Resources (Royal Military Police Officer).

At the time of writing, the biggest killer of our Soldiers and Officers is cancer. There isn't a correlation between cancer and job roles but it may put you at ease to know that a study found that "in 2023, the UK regular armed forces had a 56% statistically significantly lower risk of dying compared to the UK general population".

The Army has seven main career streams, Combat is just one. The others are: Medical, Intelligence & Communications, Logistics & Support, HR & Finance, Music, and Engineering.
