Are there any differences in the training or experiences of doctors who joined with a bursary vs direct entrants?

Anonymous asked a question to Tori C.

I'm thinking about applying to be a medical officer after I graduate medical school. I had considered applying for a bursary but understand that there aren't any left for my year. I understand that you joined as a direct entrant too, and so wondered if you know of any practical differences between direct entrants and GDMOs with medical bursaries? Additionally, could you suggest anything that might be useful to bolster or support my application in the interim? I'm already part of the OTC but was curious if there's anything specific that could be useful, especially once I start foundation training (which is very soon). Do you know if it's possible to medical electives with the army? Thanks!

    Hello,

Once you finish FY2 and start the commissioning course you are all the same (other than the bursars might have more savings than you!). But importantly you all have exactly the same opportunities for the rest of your careers, and you honestly can't tell which GDMOs are bursars and which are direct entrants, you'll all have the same experience.

I don't have anything to do with the sifting of applications, so can't give you any advice based on knowledge, but generally speaking showing a commitment to the application (like doing OTC) shows you are starting from a good place.

Most doctors get through the first parts of the process (AOSB etc..), it's the interview at the end that is the main filter. Someone who did well at interview recently emphasised the importance of paying attention on the familiarisation visit, doing your research and being prepared to answer questions on current affairs.

    I hope that helps!

Yes, that’s really helpful, thank you! And thanks for responding so quickly too!

I also wanted to ask if you know whether or not it’s possible for medical students to do their elective within the army? I ask because it seems a useful way to demonstrate committment, and becuase I’m quite interested in getting some experience too. I have come across one or two stories of this being the case, but cannot tell if they are exceptions or norms.

If so, do you have any suggestions about who might be worth reaching out to to find out more?

Additionally, I was curious about what sorts of opportunities GDMOs have for obtaining additional postgraduate qualifications (i.e. doing a masters, courses etc.)

    Thanks again!

I've not come across medical students doing electives that are not already serving, I assume this is due to issues with security clearance etc.. you could try reaching out to AMS recruiting, I think they still have contact details on their website, or alternatively they have social media as well.

The army runs a fair few internal courses, you'll do some of these as standard before you start GDMO, and then others you can apply for if your boss supports the time away from normal duties (they usually do).

Other qualifications that aren't run internally you are again likely to get the time to do provided it's a useful course and no more than a week here or there, but the cost won't necessarily be reimbursed - it depends on the course though, there is some funding available which you can apply for.
