Im an Irish citizen am currently applying to medical school in Ireland. I was wondering if its possible to join the British army as an army doctor if I receive my medical degree in Ireland or must I receive the degree in a British university ?Also must I live in the UK for 5 years in order to apply?
Policy has recently changed to say that you only need to be in the UK for 3 years or more, have indefinite leave to remain or be a British citizen or have dual nationality. The rules may be slightly different for ROI so it would be best for you to talk to the NRC on 0345 600 80 80.
As for the medical degree as long as you are registered with the GMC in the UK it does not matter where you obtain your degree from. This being said some places do require extra testing for GMC to recognise the qualification.
First you should check your eligibility as being a doctor is a specialist role someone from the team will contact you to explain in more detail after an application is made.
Thank you for your reply!, Just a few more questions, Would I be eligible for a medical bursary as an Irish student if I were to study medicine in a UK university, then join the army after and would my time spent in University qualify as my 3/5 years of residency in the UK? And also are the Foundation Years paid when you are a bursar student and employed by the army ?
Bursaries have contracts to them so you would need to be eligible before applying for one if you have any questions about citizenship or bursaries you would be better of talking to the NRC on 0345 600 80 80 and they would be able to give you some clarification as to what requirements are needed and what you are eligible for.
