Anonymous asked a question to Josh W.
Hey, Josh. I am 18, born in Canada. Grandparents were born in Scotland, and later immigrated here. My mom was born here. I'm keen on applying to the parachute regiment. Based on my own research, I reckon I may have to get an ancestry visa, and then live in the UK for 5 years and then join (I'll be 23-24 before being able to join), although I saw some people online saying that 5 years only applies to certain positions within the British Military. So is there any way I'd be eligible to join, or must I first live for 5 years via the ancestry visa?
Hi there,
You are correct, that you must be a British Citizen to apply through the non-commonwealth pathway having lived in the UK for five years. If it is the Parachute Regiment you are interested in there would be no issues with you applying with this in place. Those online saying it is only five years for some are likely referencing the security requirements for some roles but this is done a case by case basis so there are no definitive rules and a recruiter will be able advise you through this process.
Hey, sorry if I may have misinterpreted what you said,
am I correct in saying that to join the parachute regiment I must have acquired "indefinite leave to remain", via staying in the UK for 10 years (have to live in UK for 10 years, to be able to apply for indefinite leave to remain) , then I am able to apply?
Also, you said through the non-commonwealth pathway, but I am in a commonwealth country, Canada. Does that change anything? Thanks.
Adding this + (not sure if it's 5 or 10 years to get ILR, as I am seeing both answers on google, I am guessing that it depends on what you do, etc.)
Hi there my apologies, I've amended the above. It is British Citizenship for which you will have lived in the UK for five years.
Due to an unprecedented number of applications for a limited number of jobs, we are no longer inviting applications from Commonwealth nationals at this point but you can register and we will be in touch when we re open this path.
Details on this can be found here - https://jobs.army.mod.uk/how-to-join/can-i-apply/nationality/
Hey, that makes sense! Thanks for the clarification!
