Hi, this really is a question like, 'how long is a piece of string'. All officers are given 12 years on a Short Service Commission. Converting to Intermediate Regular Commission will depend on many things; that particular year and structural vacancies (ie how many can the army convert), your year of service and how many are converting, how many looks you've had at conversion, your reports are obviously really critical and how high you sit in your peer group etc etc. My advice is, not to worry too much now - you have lots of time on your side and it's good to think about and always have on your reports both on the tick box and in writing from your 1 and 2 RO and that they fully support a conversion of commission. From someone who did not get an IRC (back in 2013 when the army was making people redundant and all sorts) and therefore left not through choice when i rejoined a few years later, getting an IRC was my top priority (a SSC used to only be 8yrs) and i have now been given a Reg C so the fact you are thinking about it is great as you are taking ownership of your career but honestly, don't stress too much. You can always spk to your desk officer as they will be able to provide you with a bit more info and be honest with you about your career. I hope this helps.
