How much front line work a military doctor does will vary considerably depending on when they served and what specialty they are doing.

GPs tend to deploy more frequently than secondary care specialists, and when they deploy are usually based further forward, but deployments that are high risk are likely to require secondary care as well.

There are lots of doctors currently serving who spent time in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I am sure many of them found their work emotionally difficult. At present the British Army are not involved in any conflicts of that scale, and so the doctors that are currently deploying are unlikely to be involved in such traumatic situations.
