I sorted out my application to join AFC. I would like to know what it’s like there and any fitness preparation I should do To be ready I think I want to join the Royal Engineers, possibly armoured. I am worried as I have not seen many BAME people there I might not fit in.

In your first week of training at the Army Foundation College (AFC) Harrogate, recruits can expect a well-planned and structured introduction to military life. The initial phase is designed to transition from a civilian to soldier through learning what is expected of you through discipline, routines, and expectations of the British Army (Core Values). On arrival to the college, you will complete necessary administrative tasks complete Initial health screenings ensure recruits are fit for training and go through the initial Kit Issue. You will receive your uniforms, equipment, and other essentials. This includes everything from combat gear to personal items for your stay. You will then go through a series of Briefings and Orientations about the college and the training program. You will then start Basic Military Training, Early lessons in drill (marching and formations), physical fitness routines, and basic military customs and courtesies. Learning how to live army accommodation, including making beds, keeping personal and communal areas clean, and adhering to personal hygiene and responsibilities. Recruits undergo basic fitness assessments to gauge their starting fitness levels too. You will have a in detail Introduction to Physical Training (PT) Beginning with light exercises, recruits start their physical conditioning, which will progressively intensify. You will also do Team building Activities designed to foster camaraderie, teamwork, and trust among your fellow recruits. You bond quick and look out for each other very quickly learning the importance of punctuality, attention to detail, following orders and winning/ failing as a team. This includes adhering to the structured daily schedule and routines.
The first week at AFC Harrogate is designed to be challenging but supportive, ensuring recruits transition smoothly into military life while beginning to build the physical, mental, and emotional resilience needed for their future training and service. The good thing is no matter what cap badge or trade recruits in your in take are you are all in the same boat and wish to join the army so already have a mutual intrest and goal! its normal to worry about these things but you will be fine!
